farm hand

May - August 2023 • Fleetwood, NC

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed working at App State's Teaching and Research Farm because I learned a variety of agricultural tasks every day. My co-workers and I collaborated on a variety of projects with the goal of maintaining and improving this beautiful corner of App State. Because our work was project-based, the work never got boring- we got to do something different every day. I would absolutely work for the farm again!

What I wish was different

I wish that we could've worked in the middle of August as well. Unfortunately, there were not funds available to hire workers during this time.

Advice

I would highly recommend volunteering at the farm if you are interested in working there! Understanding how the different areas of production work makes it easier to carry out independent tasks. Volunteering also gives you an opportunity to see if you'd be interested in the type of work we do. If you like strict routines or repetitive, straightforward tasks, this might not be the role for you. My coworkers and I practice a lot of independent problem solving and our work varied from day to day.
