Video Production Assistant for Climate Curriculum Development

A cross-campus faculty collaboration recently secured a grant to expand climate education at Appalachian. The project includes developing several video modules that spotlight existing climate mitigation and climate adaptation initiatives in North Carolina to tell strong stories about our capacity to address the problems of climate change, and are intended for use in an introductory climate literacy course for undergraduate students at Appalachian.

 

We seek a student (undergraduate or graduate) with strong videography skills and experience to work with us throughout the 2021-2022 academic year to produce these video modules. The position will be located in the Department of Sustainable Development (SD) and will be supervised by an SD faculty member. We see this as an exciting opportunity for a student filmmaker to expand their portfolio and contribute to Appalachian’s work on the biggest challenge facing humanity.

 

●     Knowledge of documentary film pre-production, production, and post-production

●     Proven skills in video production and post-production, including video equipment operation and filming, audio recording, lighting management, and video editing

●     Experience planning and conducting interviews

●     Experience with storytelling through video format

●     Excellent attention to detail

●     Ability to receive feedback and make iterative revisions to work

●     Ability to work independently, stay organized and meet deadlines

●     Occasional ability to travel to field locations for filming

●     Interest in climate communication (optional, though preferred)

●     Experience reading scientific literature (optional, though preferred)

 

Responsibilities: Work with faculty supervisor to produce engaging educational video modules on responses/solutions to climate change. Faculty supervisor (with input from the faculty team) will lead the content development process and the student assistant will play a supporting role in pre-production (e.g., additional library research, site scoping, feedback on storyboards, scheduling). Student Assistant will take the lead role in filming and editing video modules. Much of the filming will occur in the Library’s Digital Media Studio, though some will occur in classrooms and some will occur on location in the field (local or within day-trip distance). Faculty supervisor (with input from the faculty team) will provide direction for the post-production phase.

 

Compensation and Hours: $15/hr, paid bi-weekly. We anticipate 15-20 hrs/week of work during the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters (not to exceed a total of 555 hrs for the academic year). Schedule flexible, to be determined with supervisor. Start date: August 1.
