Reports To: Campus Principal
Terms of Employment:
10 months per year; annual contract
Primary Purpose:
The School Guidance Counselor/Social Worker works as part of the Student Services team to provide students with academic guidance and that supports student academic, social, physical, and personal life-career college development and readiness.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
• Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university
• LCSW preferred
• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee paid by the employee
Special Knowledge/Skills:
• Demonstrates effective, written and oral communication skills; interpret policies, and procedures as needed per testing program(s).
• Demonstrates organizational skills which utilize problem-solving and adaptability for creating and maintaining a positive orderly, purposeful, learning/working environment for instructional purposes.
• Demonstrates ability to assess and modify an effective instructional program aligned to the Campus
Improvement Plan, Comprehensive Needs Assessment, and Program Evaluation.
• Demonstrate through knowledge of case management, Marchment Act & Baker Act procedures, and group and individual therapy
Experience:
• Minimum three (3) years’ experience in the field of education
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Professional Knowledge
1. Requires knowledge of life-career-college curriculum development, the special education process and rules, community-based resources, counseling and guidance issues affecting the development and functioning of students’ human growth and development, best practices in consultation and collaboration, social and cultural diversity, professional school counseling, school counseling program administration, emergency and crisis resources and supports, family systems, mental health and developmental services, research, and assessment.
2. Help identify and resolve social and emotional difficulties of children and youth which interfere with their attendance, adjustment and achievement in school.
Abilities

2. Requires ability to develop constructive partnerships with students, staff, and families; plan, organize, implement, and administer guidance counseling and life-career-college development programs; recognize substance use and abuse; implement crisis prevention and intervention strategies; advocate for students; resolve conflict; use, manage, and analyze student data; integrate guidance, counseling, and life-career-college programs within school curriculum; identify student needs; and successfully begin, maintain, and terminate counseling relationships within appropriate boundaries.
3. Accept all appropriate referrals through established intake procedures and respond to these requests as stated in school board policy.
Planning and preparation
1. Demonstrate knowledge of life, career, and college readiness development and student program.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of students’ learning goals and required work habits within the curriculum to promote and support student success.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of special education process and rules.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of compulsory attendance laws.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of substance and abuse, bullying, harassment, discrimination, violence, student dating, and other issues impacting students.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of at-risk behaviors and intervention strategies, and community-based resources to support students and families.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of child and adolescent development.
8. Maintain an in-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations impacting guidance, counseling, and life-career- college development.
9. Demonstrate knowledge of resources, both within and beyond the school and district, and promote relationships with external agencies in support of student academic, social, physical, and personal success.
10. Establish goals for the school guidance, counseling, and life-career-college program appropriate to the school and the students served
11. Plan and document the school guidance, counseling, and life-career-college program to integrate with the overall school program.
Communication and Community Relations
1. Coordinate and initiate referrals of students to other specialists in student services and to public and private agencies in the community.
2. Make home visitations to interview parents
3. Seek to secure assistance for families who cannot provide the basic needs of food, clothing, and medical services
4. May serve as a consultant for ESE screenings, staffing, and follow-up procedures.
5. Provide placement services to students by assisting them in making appropriate choices of school subjects/courses of study, and in making transitions from one school level to another, one school to another, and from school to employment.
6. Consult with parents and act as resource person on the growth and development of their children.
7. Work closely with members of the administrative/teaching staff to the end that all school resources are directed toward meeting individual students’ needs.
8. Assist in disseminating research findings to school staff members.
9. Interpret counseling and guidance services of the school to school staff members, parents, and community.
10. May plan with Occupational Specialists to implement their program.
11. Serve as consultant upon request of the principal concerning instances of child abuse, Florida Statute 282.041
12. Perform other such duties as requested by the Principal.
